IPhone user resizing photos using shortcut

Photos app editor has many functions, but can't resize photos. Fortunately, you can use shortcut or third party app to resize or reduce photo size on iPhone and iPad. That's how.

How to resize a photo using shortcuts

If you need to reduce the resolution or file size of a photo, look no further than the Shortcuts app. Shortcuts is Apple's built-in automation tool that helps you create your own tools and simplify the multi-step processes that you often perform..

With shortcuts, you can create simple automations that follow predefined steps. In this guide, we will create a shortcut that can take one or more photos, resize it based on your input and save the resulting output in the Photos app.

To start, open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad. In the tab “My shortcuts”, tap the More button (“+”) in the upper right corner to create a new shortcut.

Tap the More button on the tab "My shortcuts" to create a new shortcut.

Touch the button “Add action”.

Touch "Add action" in the new shortcut.

Find and then add the action “Change image size”.

Add the action

Now is the time to customize this action. Touch the button “Image”.

Touch the button

In the pop-up window, choose option “Direct access entry”. This means that the shortcut will resize any image you send to it. (It is useful for sending multiple images using the Share menu in the Photos app.).

Choose

Next, time to choose the resulting width and height. By default, the shortcut will resize the image to 640 pixels wide with auto height.

Touch the button

You can touch the button “640” to change the default value, or you can change to option “Ask every time”. This would be our recommendation, since it gives you the freedom to change the resolution without duplicating the shortcut.

Switch to

It is better to leave the option “Automatic height” as default. Next, tap the More button (+) to add the next action.

Tap the plus button to add another action.

Find and then add the action “Save to photo album”.

Add the action

By default, this action will save the resized image to album “Recent”. If you wish, you can touch the button “Recent” to change album.

Change the default location to save the photo by tapping the button

Now the shortcut is created. Touch the button “Menu” to customize it.

Tap the three-dot Menu button at the top of the shortcut.

Here, name the shortcut at the top and then make sure to enable the option “Show on share sheet”.

Customize the name of the shortcut and enable the function

Touch the button “Ready” at the top to save the personalization.

Touch

On the shortcut screen, touch the button “Ready” again to save the shortcut.

Touch

You are now done in the Shortcuts app. Next, launch Photos on your iPhone or iPad.

In pictures, select a photo (or the photos) the size of which you want to change and touch thebutton. “Share” (that looks like a rounded square with an arrow pointing up).

Tap the Share button in the Photos app.

Scroll down and select the shortcut we just created (in our example, is named “Resize images”, but it is possible that you have given it a different name in the Shortcuts application above).

Choose the shortcut

Enter the desired image width in pixels and tap the button “Ready”.

Enter the width to resize the image and tap

After a moment, the shortcut will resize the image (or images), and you will find it (o ellos) saved in album “Recent” in the Photos app.

Now you can share the resized images on your Mac or use them in any application or web portal you want.

How to resize a photo with a third-party app

Even though shortcuts can be a great tool for advanced users (a single shortcut can save you a lot of time if you are going to resize images often), taking the time to create the shortcut may seem like an overkill if you just want to resize a few photos every now and then.

This is where you can find comfort in the free Image Size app. The application has a very simple resizing tool that helps you change the resolution and at the same time reduce the size of the photo.

To start, download the Image Size app from the App Store. After opening the app, tap the Photos button in the upper left corner.

The application will ask you for access to your photo library. You can give the app access to your entire photo library, or you can choose only some photos.

Grant access to Image Size to all or some of your photos.

Once you allow access, go to your library and select the image you want to resize.

Choose the photo you want to resize.

In the image preview, touch the button “To select”.

In the preview, touch the button

You will now see the image in the editor. In the section “Pixel”, change the “Width” or the “Alto” to resize the image (make sure the button in the middle that looks like a chain link is enabled so that the aspect linkage remains the same).

Enter the width or height of the image you want to resize.

The application will display the file size of the new resized image. Once you are satisfied, tap the save button (that looks like a downward pointing arrow with a line underneath) in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Tap the Save button to save the resized image in the Photos app.

The application will save the resized image in the folder “Recent” in the Photos app. You can repeat this procedure to resize as many photos as you want.

On a mac? You can resize a photo in a couple of seconds with the built-in preview app.
