What is an Apple ProMotion display?

Apple has been placing screens “ProMotion” on multiple devices for a few years. The label is a marketing definition for the technology that is not unique to Apple hardware., but still offers some tangible benefits over smaller screens.

ProMotion Displays Refresh a 120Hz

For a display to be labeled ProMotion, must have a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. The refresh rate of a screen refers to how many times the screen is refreshed in a single second. Most screens, including standard non-ProMotion iPhones and iPads, use a screen of 60 Hz.

ProMotion displays are also adaptable, meaning they can change their refresh rates to suit whatever you're doing. While playing a game, you can use the full 120Hz refresh rate for smooth gameplay, but if you are just looking at a static screen, tablet or smartphone can reduce refresh rate to suit.

This is the reason why it is announced that the ProMotion screen of the iPhone family 13 has a range of 10 Hz a 120 Hz. At its lowest refresh rate, the Iphone 13 will update your screen only 10 times per second.

Benefits of a ProMotion display

The obvious benefit of a higher refresh rate is smoother movement on the screen, whether you're scrolling on social media, browsing the web or playing a game. When you double the refresh rate, effectively doubles the amount of comments your taps and swipes generate.

This leads to a more enjoyable user experience where multitasking feels more fluid and responsive.. In the games, it can even give you an advantage, since it has twice the theoretical frame output compared to a 60Hz display. This is only the case if the tablet or smartphone has a GPU powerful enough to match the highest refresh rate..

Drawing with a Apple pencil also benefits from a higher refresh rate, since there is a lower latency (solo 20 ms on the latest models) before you see the digital ink appear on the screen. This leads to a writing and drawing experience that feels more natural..

As the screen adapts the refresh rate based on what you are doing, ProMotion devices can save battery life by avoiding unnecessary updates. As an example, the iPhone will reduce the refresh rate while looking at a static photo and then dynamically raise it back to levels “Soft” when you move on to the next one.

This is equivalent to the variable refresh rate technology that is now common in most gaming monitors and the latest consoles.. The big difference is that gamers use this technology to remove screen tearing instead of saving battery life..

Available on iPhone Pro and iPad Pro (for now)

You can find ProMotion displays on both iPad Pro and iPhone models 13 Pro. The Iphone 13 normal does not include a ProMotion display.

Clearly Apple loves branded features, like the highest refresh rate displays with their own terminology, as was the case with the AirPods and Adaptive EQ.
