3 Ways to Mark a Folder in Finder on Mac

Contents

If you find yourself frequently searching for a certain folder in Finder on your Mac, can create a “marker” quick for that folder instead. Here are three alternatives to do it.

Method 1: add a shortcut to the favorites sidebar

The easiest way to add a bookmark-equivalent shortcut to a folder is by dragging it to the sidebar “Favorites” in Finder. First, click on the Finder icon in your Dock to bring the Finder to the foreground.

Next, open a new Finder window. If you don't see a sidebar on the left side of the window, select “Watch”> “Show sidebar” in the menu bar (or press Option + Command + S on your keyboard).

In the Finder menu, select "Watch" and later "Show sidebar".

Using the Finder window, Locate the folder you would like to add to your sidebar “Favorites”. Click and drag that folder icon to the list “Favorites”. (If the list of “Favorites” is contracted, click the small arrow next to it to expand it).

Drag the folder to the sidebar

Once you have the folder icon on the list “Favorites”, you will have the possibility to place it in any position. Release the mouse or trackpad button when you are ready and you will see the folder name appear in your list of “Favorites”.

The folder has been added to the sidebar

To visit the folder you linked, click on the shortcut in the sidebar and that folder will open immediately. This list appears in the sidebar of every Finder window, so it will always be useful.

You can repeat this procedure as many times as you want. Once the number of items in the sidebar exceeds the height of the window, a scroll bar will appear allowing you to scroll through them. And if you ever want to remove a shortcut from the sidebar “Favorites”, just drag it out of the window and release the mouse button.

Method 2: add a shortcut to the dock

You can also easily create a shortcut to a folder on your Mac's Dock.. To do it, locate the folder in Finder (or on your desk), then drag the folder to the Dock section next to Trash.

Drag any folder to the Dock to create a shortcut there.

Once i am there, release the mouse or trackpad button and the folder will stay in place. If you click the shortcut once, you will get a quick preview of the contents of that folder. If you want to visit the folder in Finder, right click (or press Control and click) on the dock icon and select “To open” in the menu that appears.

Method 3: create a desktop alias for the folder

You can also create bookmark-like shortcuts for folders on your Mac desktop by creating what macOS calls “Alias”, which are like shortcuts in Windows. When you double click an alias in macOS, Finder opens and you see the contents of that folder immediately.

To create an alias, locate the folder you would like “to mark” and right click on its icon. In the pop-up menu, select “Create aliases”.

When the Alias appears next to you, you can drag the alias icon to your desktop, your Dock or anywhere else in Finder. The best part about using aliases is that you can collect them in another folder if you want, gathering shortcuts to important documents or folders without moving their actual locations. Happy bookmarking!
