Click the plus sign (+) to add a keyboard shortcut.

A new window will appear containing a drop-down menu and two text fields. Click on the drop-down menu labeled “App” and select the application for which you want to create a shortcut (we choose “pages”).

Select the application you want to have a keyboard shortcut.

Next, open the app and find the exact name of the menu command you want to turn into a shortcut. We choose “Page thumbnails” on the menu “Watch”, since it doesn't have a keyboard shortcut yet.

We clicked on

Return to the keyboard shortcut input window and type the exact name of the menu command that you want to convert to a shortcut in the box “Menu title”.

After, click on the box “Keyboard shortcut” and write the shortcut you want to use to activate it. Elegimos Shift + Command + K because it was not in use yet.

You can use almost any combination of Command, Option and Control with any number, letter or character key. You can also use Shift to make a unique combination.

Type the name of the menu command in the box

Click on “Add” and the pop-up window will close. Now you will see your shortcut in the preferences list of “Keyboard”. In the app, you should also see your new shortcut in the dropdown next to its associated command.

Tips for custom shortcuts for Mac

Create a shortcut

Keep the following tips in mind whenever creating keyboard shortcuts:

  • When creating a shortcut, you must use the exact name of a menu item. This includes any capitalization., spaces or punctuation.
  • The key combination you specify must be unique. If there is a duplicate, one of the functions will not execute correctly.
  • If using the keyboard shortcut you want to use, try adding Shift, Control or both. As an example, instead of Command + V (which is reserved to get text), you can use Shift + Control + Command + V.
  • You can create universal keyboard shortcuts. Just select “All applications” of the list “Applications”. Your shortcut will work in any app that has the same menu item you typed.
  • “Rename”, “Compress” and “Bring everything to the front” would be useful shortcuts. These would be useful for window management in many applications. "Compress" works in Finder, but it could also work in other programs.

Keyboard shortcuts are a powerful feature to have in your Mac arsenal. Explore your favorite apps and see what comes to mind!!
