If you're getting tired of staring at the same cluttered Mac desktop, it might be time to tidy things up a bit. The good news is that macOS offers several customization options to help you organize your Mac's desktop icons..
Organize using stacks
If your Mac desktop looks like this, well, the first thing you need to do is enable the Stacks feature which was first introduced in macOS Mojave.
To do this, find an empty space on your desktop and right click. Here, choose the options of “Use batteries”.
Instantly, macOS will organize and group all similar files. You will find different stacks for images, documents, etc.
The next thing you need to do is change the default location to save the screenshots. If you use your Mac regularly, your desktop can be cluttered with screenshots. Simply changing the default save destination to a different folder will do wonders.

Customize your desktop icons
Now that you have Stacks enabled and have the screenshot situation under control, it's time to move on to the good: customize desktop icons.
To start, right-click an empty space on your desktop and select the “Show display options”.
This screen will show you all the options to customize the desktop icons.
In option “Stack by”, you can choose to group stacks by type, last opening date, date of addition, Modification date, creation date and labels. We have covered this in more detail in our battery guide..
Click the drop-down menu next to “Sort by” to sort all icons by name, kind, date of last opening, date of addition, Modification date, creation date, size and labels.
The next section is for customizing the visual style.
Use the slider under the option “Icon size” to increase or decrease the size of the icon. If you are using a monitor with your Mac, increasing the icon size can be really useful.
Next, you can give the icons a little more room to breathe by increasing the “Grid spacing”.
From the option “Text size”, can increase the size of the label text. Can go between 10 points and 16 size points.
While you can't hide a tag, you can change it to the right side of the icon (if you want to see longer labels).
If you want to view information about the file or folder, like how many files are in a folder or the available space on a hard drive, we recommend that you enable the “Display item information”.
Finally, if you don't want to see a preview of the file (especially images and PDF files) as icon, you can uncheck the option “Show icon preview”.
Once you have customized all the options, go back to your Mac desktop to see how it transforms.
Now that you have conquered your desk, it's time to learn how to use multiple desktops on your Mac with Mission Control.
