Pin Microsoft Outlook to the desktop background

Contents

Have you ever wanted to just “catch” your Outlook calendar on the desktop? For those of us with many monitors, makes even more sense … having the calendar open on the second monitor at all times would be a huge productivity boost.

Over the years, I have experimented with having multiple copies of Outlook open or using desktop widgets, but nothing works as well as Michael Scrivo's Outlook desktop tool.

This little app sits right on your desktop and gives you a fully functional Outlook view of any folder you want.

You can interact directly with these windows, even add new items directly from the pinned views.

To enter setup, you will need to use the new tray icon, where you can choose between Outlook views or open preferences.

If you want to resize or move the widget, you can use the sliders found in the preferences.

You can modify the opacity of the window with the slider, even though I have found the default to be quite useful.

Switch to calendar month view

One of the things I noticed right away was that if I'm in the daily calendar view, can't easily switch to month view. What you need to do is right-click on the calendar and select “Go to date”.

Change the drop-down menu to “Monthly calendar” instead of whatever is there.

It will now switch to the monthly calendar mode.

Note that you can go directly to the day mode by double clicking on the day header.

Running multiple copies

If you want to show your calendar and other folder at the same time, you can start a separate copy of the app. The app does not strictly allow this, so the second copy will inherit the settings of the last one that was opened … which means that you must configure it every time you open it.

If you have a desk that always stays on, this is a workable trick.
