Using instant search shortcut keys in Microsoft Outlook 2007

Contents

If you are using Microsoft Outlook as your email client, you've probably already used the instant search box … but using it can be even more “but using it can be even more” but using it can be even more, instead of having to turn to the mouse every time.

Focus the search panel

If you want to focus on the search pane to search the current folder, you can use shortcut key Ctrl + E to focus on the search box and then start typing:

If you are a fan of a clean inbox, you probably end up clicking the All Mail Items link quite often …

Focus the search panel for all items

Instead of focusing the search pane only for the current folder, use the Ctrl shortcut + Alt + A to switch to the All Mail Items search view.

Note: If your search in the current folder returns nothing, but using it can be even more “but using it can be even more” … you don't need to search all items first. Very useful.

Back to folder

Once you have done your search, you can go back to the folder you were viewing using the Esc key.

Note: If you open the All Items search panel first, Esc key will not return you to Inbox, but if you focus the current folder (Ctrl + E), do a search and then use Ctrl + Alt + A to search all folders, later the Esc key returns it to the previous folder.

Show search query builder

The little arrow to the right of the search box expands to help you perform a search without having to remember all the search operators. To show u hide this panel, you can use shortcut key Ctrl + Alt + W

This should work in any view that shows the search box.

Use advanced search

If you need more search options at your fingertips, you can use shortcut key Ctrl + Shift + F to open the Advanced Search dialog, where you can search for practically any field you want.

Search within a message (or other items)

If you have a very long email that you need to search, you may have tried the Ctrl hotkey + F that works in most applications … and suddenly you will see message forwarding screen and get confused.

Instead, use the F4 key to open the search dialog / replacement.

You can also search backwards with Shift + F4.

Open desktop search from Outlook

If you like Windows Vista's built-in search dialog, you can open it from Outlook using Ctrl shortcut key combination + Alt + K.

This will allow you to search through everything that has been indexed on your disk, including email.
