A French indent is used to place the first line of each paragraph against the margin, with each additional line indented. If you want to add hanging indents to a Microsoft Word document, this is what to do.

You will see hanging indents applied when adding bibliographies in Microsoft Word to satisfy the style guide requirements of certain types of academic documents. Despite this, you can use hanging indents for any reason, since they allow you to emphasize the beginning of each new paragraph for clarity.

Add a French indent to a Microsoft Word document

You can apply a French indent to individual paragraphs or to the document as a whole. Applying a French indentation will keep the first line in the usual position, square against the margins of your document, with each additional line indented inward.
