How to show and hide rulers in Microsoft Word

Contents

Rulers in Word help you position text, graphics, tables and other items in your documents. To gain a little extra space in the document, can hide horizontal and vertical rulers.

If you are working on a small screen, you may want to temporarily hide parts of the Word window to maximize the space used for your document. If you are not using the rules today, can easily hide them, hide them and then show them again.

Rulers in Word only show when you are in Print Layout view. Because, if you don't see the rules and haven't disabled them, click on the tab “Watch” and then click the button “Print layout” in the Views section.

The View tab is also where you can hide or show the rulers. To hide the rules, uncheck the box “Cco” in the Show section. To show the rules again, just check the box “Cco”.

The rulers are removed from the document space and you gain a little more space to work. To show the rules again, just check the box “Cco” in the View tab.

If you don't use the vertical ruler shown on the left side of the document space, but you want to show the horizontal ruler at the top of the document space, can hide only the vertical ruler. To do this, click on the tab “File”.

On the backstage screen, click on “Choices” in the list of items on the left.

Click on “Advanced” in the list of items on the left side of the Word Options screen.

Scroll down to the Display section and uncheck the box “Show vertical ruler in print layout view”.

Click on “To accept” to accept the change and close the Word Options dialog box.

Now, the vertical ruler is hidden. If the box “Cco” is checked in the View tab, the horizontal ruler is still displayed at the top of the document space.

Note that if the box “Cco” in the Show section of the View tab is not checked, no rule will be displayed, whether or not the vertical ruler is enabled.

You can also hide the ribbon in Word to free up more space in the document.
