Microsoft wants to make your research easier. With the Word Researcher tool, you can close your web browser and get sources for school essays, research papers and similar documents with a few clicks.
What can you do with the investigator?
The Investigator role, powered by Bing, provides you with a useful search box to find people, events, places and concepts. Your search results give you relevant topics and top sources, including books, journals, websites and images.
When you select the font you want, you can see an overview, the history, The ubication, pictures and other important details. And the best part is that it never leaves your Microsoft Word document.
At the same time to see the details of your topic, you can start an outline for your post, as well as adding and citing text. Click on the main topic or one of the information sections and add it directly to your document.
Here, We'll show you how to reduce your research time and speed up your post creation with the Researcher tool in Microsoft Word.
Note: At the time of writing, Investigator is available with Word for Microsoft 365, Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac and Word 2016. It is enabled for Microsoft subscribers 365 for Windows desktop clients.
Researcher open in Microsoft Word
To use the Investigator tool, open the tab “References” from your word document. Click on “Investigator” in the section “Research” of the tape.
When the panel is opened on the right, type a definition in the search box and you're on your way.
Review relevant topics and main sources
You will receive your search results with Relevant Topics at the top and Top Sources at the bottom.
Relevant issues
Some topics may only give you a couple of relevant topics. Click on “More topics” below that section for additional sources.
If you click on one of the relevant topics, you will see a good overview of the topic. At the end of the section “General description”, click on “Read more” to get all the details.
Depending on your topic, you will see several sections of blocks full of details. This structure is useful to start your schematic with them, that we will describe next.
If the topic and the relevant topic have images, you can click on “See all images” for a neat grid of photos and illustrations. Click on one to open your browser and view the image online. At the same time, you can add them to your document, that we will also show you below.
Main sources
For even more options, the area “Main sources” offers books, magazines and websites. Select any of them to know their details.
If you choose a relevant topic at the top first, you can filter your main sources by subtopic. Click the drop-down box for “All the themes” and choose one.
Although most of the material is contained in Word, you can find a source here and there that you must open in your browser. Click the link to open the source site in your default web browser.
Add topic items to your document
At the same time to view information on your topic, can add titles, text and images directly to your document using Researcher.
Add headers
At the top right of the section for each source, you will see a plus sign. Click on the icon “+” to add that section as a collapsible heading for your document outline. Remember, this just adds the header, not the text, inside section.
Add text
If you want to add a piece of text to your document, you can also do it. Select the font text by dragging the cursor across it. When i release, you will see a small box appear with options for “Add and cite” Y “Add”.
When you choose “Add and cite”, the text will appear in your document with the source cited at the end of the snippet. The appointment is automatically formatted, so you can add it to a bibliography easily.
When you choose “Add”, the text will still appear in your document, but without the quote.
Add images
If your theme offers images and you click “See all images”, you also have the option to add one or more of them. This is very convenient because you should not hunt them yourself..
Click on the icon “+” in the corner of the image to add it to your paper.
It will appear in your document with the source cited below.
Note: Make sure to respect copyrights when using the available images for your purpose. If you are not sure if you can use an image, click on “More information” on the image grid. This brings you to Microsoft legal website explaining copyright and offering frequently asked questions. You can also check our post on images with a Creative Commons license for those Creative Commons sources.
College essays and research papers are enough work in themselves. When using Researcher in Microsoft Word, can ease the burden of your document research and get a boost in your content.
