How to set the default operating system on a dual-boot Windows computer

If you have multiple versions of Windows on your PC and prefer one over the others, can make that OS (SO) preferred is the default so that it always loads automatically. We will show you how to do it.

Please note that this guide only works if you have installed multiple Windows operating systems on your PC. If you have a dual boot system of Windows and Linux, check out our GRUB2 guide to learn how to set the default OS in your case.

To configure the default operating system on a dual-boot system, Windows 10 offers two ways. They both work the same and you can continue with either.

Determine the default operating system from the system properties in Windows 10

A way to choose an operating system as the default in Windows 10 is through the System Properties window.

To use this method, First, open box “Run” pressing Windows + R.

In the frame “Run”, type the following and press Enter:

Click on "Setting" in the section "Startup and recovery" in the window "System properties".

In the window “Startup and recovery” that opens, click drop down menu “Default operating system” open box.

Subsequently, at the bottom of the window “Startup and recovery”, click on “To accept”.

Tip: For Windows to load its default operating system faster, open box “open box”.

In the window “System properties”, on the bottom, click on “To accept” to close the window.

And that's it. Your selected operating system is now the default operating system on your PC. Windows will automatically load this operating system when you turn on your computer.

Determine the default operating system from the system settings in Windows 10

Another way to set the default operating system in Windows 10 is through the system configuration tool.

To use it, First, open the menu “Beginning” and look for “System configuration”. Then click on the tool in the search results.

In the window “System configuration”, at the top, click on the tab “start”.

In the tab “start”, from the big white box at the top, select the operating system you want to set as the default. Subsequently, below the white box, click on “Set as default”.

Next to the selected operating system, open box “open box”. This indicates that your default operating system was configured correctly.

You will see a message asking you to restart your PC. You don't have to do it right away if you need to save open files and close running programs. For this case, click the option “Exit without restart” in the message.

If you agree to restart your PC, select option “Restart” instead.

Are you ready. Windows now knows your default operating system and will load it on all your future boots. Very useful!
