When Windows 11 launches in the fall of 2021, you will be able to see an estimate of the installation time of Windows updates. It's a feature that is rolling out now for some Windows Insiders members, but hopefully we should see her live on finished builds. Is that how it works.
Estimates everywhere
When this feature is fully implemented for Insiders, if you are running Windows 11, you will see an estimate of the time it will take to install a firmware update in various locations. As detailed by Microsoft in its Windows blog post 11 Insider, those places include the Windows Update settings page, the Windows Update icon on the taskbar, in the power button menu in Start and in the reboot notifications.
At the time of writing this post, members of Windows Insiders are reporting on Reddit at several threads than estimate windows update 11 always says “5 minutes”, even though updates take up to two hours in some cases. Estimated update time is likely to be more accurate as Microsoft refines the feature before the full release of Windows 11 this autumn.
If you are running Windows 11 Insider Preview right now, you may not see the estimate yet. Microsoft seems to be releasing it only for a subset of Insiders on the Dev channel, possibly for Tests A / B purposes.

What if I am not a connoisseur?
If you are not running Windows today 11 Insider Preview, you don't have to worry: Microsoft plans to include update estimate feature in Windows retail release 11 this autumn. Of course, this plan could change when most upgrade their Windows PC 10 because Windows 11 is still in development.
If Microsoft can make the estimated update time more accurate, it will be a very useful feature to have, allowing you to better plan for updates instead of getting stuck with one that accidentally takes a lot longer than anticipated.
