How to make a GIF of anything on a Samsung Galaxy phone

Taking a screenshot is easy, but what about recording an animated GIF? That can be more complex. Despite this, with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, It is very likely that you can do it very easily..

Many Samsung smartphones have a function called “Smart selection”. You can use this to choose specific parts of the screen, but it also includes a GIF tool. Smart Select used to be exclusive to Galaxy Note devices, but now it is enabled for many more.

Smart Select can only be entered from the function “Edge Panels” by Samsung, so you must first enable it. Swipe down once from the top of the screen of your Samsung Galaxy device and then tap the gear icon.

Then, go to section “Screen”.

Please select "Screen settings".

Turn on the switch “Edge panels” and then select it.

An animation will show how to enter the edge panels. Go to “Panels”.

There are several panels to select from here. Make sure the panel “Smart selection” is selected.

With that out of the way, find something you'd like to turn into a GIF and open the Edge Panel by swiping out from the translucent tab at the edge of the screen.

Open the edge panel.

You may need to swipe left or right to enter the Smart Selection panel. From there, you will see an option of “Animation”, what is it that you desire.

If you are using YouTube as a GIF source, Smart Select will automatically highlight the video. You can also manually drag the corners to choose what you want.

Before you start recording, Tap the quality dropdown menu and select “High quality” O “Standard Quality”.

Now, you can touch the button “Engrave” to start capturing the animated GIF. Touch the button “Ready” to finish recording the GIF.

You will now have the option to draw on the GIF, share it directly or save it to your local storage. Here is the GIF I made.

This is a truly nifty tool that has tons of uses.. Making a quick GIF from a YouTube video is just one example of what you can do!! If you are not using your phone, there are other methods for creating GIFs out there.
