When you need support for your Mac, or would you like to install some kind of update, you usually need to know the exact model and year of the Mac you are using. Here's how to find out quickly.

First, click on the menu “Apple” in the corner of the screen and select “Regarding this Mac”.

Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen and select "About this Mac".

A window will appear showing a summary of your Mac's specifications. Find the first line under the name and version number of macOS. It will show the model name and year of your Mac. In this example, the model name is “MacBook Pro (13 inches, M1, 2020)”.

Modern Mac model names generally consist of the variety of Mac followed by screen size and the time of year it was released.. Because, you may see something like “iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inches, finals of 2015)” O “MacBook Air (13 inches, 2017)”.

Mac model name and year are listed in the window "About this Mac".

(If you need to provide more details when receiving assistance from Apple customer service, Apple representatives can also ask you for the serial number of your Mac, which also appears in this window but appears blurry in our example for privacy reasons).

If you want a slightly more detailed view, Click the button “System information” just below the list of specifications.

Click on

In the section “Hardware” System Information, you will see the model name of your Mac, the model identifier and serial number in the listing. The “model identifier” which is listed here is more a surname from a group of similar Mac models is used for software purposes and is less specific than the “model name”.
