If you get bored of the default theme in your Office desktop apps, you can change the color and background to give it a more personalized feel. It's simple and only takes a few steps, so let's go to that.

Change Office color theme via app alternatives

By default, office uses what it calls the theme “Colorful”. This theme gives the title bar the color of its respective application. As an example, Word is blue, Excel is green, PowerPoint is red, etc. At the same time, provides you with a standard light gray background and ribbon, and a white content area.

You can change the theme from within any Office application, and those changes are made in all your Office applications.

First, open any Office application. We will use Word in this example.

Click on the tab “File” at the top left of the tape.

select File

A panel will appear on the left side with several different options. At the bottom of the panel, select “Choices”.

Options on the panel

In the Word Options window that appears, make sure the tab “General” is selected on the left and then on the right, look for the section “Customize your copy of Microsoft Office”. Here you can change the Office background and theme.

General configuration

You have four theme options: Colorful, Dark gray, Black or white. Select the theme you would like to use.

Next, if you want to change the Office background, you have some selections to select:

  • Bottomless (predetermined)
  • Calligraphy
  • Circles and Stripes
  • Circuit
  • Clouds
  • Doodle circles
  • Doodle diamonds
  • Geometry
  • Lunch box
  • School supplies
  • Spring
  • Stars
  • Pajitas
  • Three rings
  • Submarine

Office background options

Once you have selected the desired theme, click on “To accept” and ready!

Unfortunately, Microsoft did not provide a preview of the themes with this option, so you will have to repeat these steps to see each one. If you are not satisfied with that and use Office 365, you can use “Account settings” to change the theme, showing a preview.

Change Office color theme through account settings in Office 365

Back in the application you are using, select “File” and then select “Bill” in the panel that appears.

Your account information will appear. Here, select the menu under “Office Background” O “Office theme”, explore the different backgrounds and themes with a live preview and choose the ones you want.

You will see a live preview as you go.
