How to use Gmail with Microsoft Outlook

Contents

If you use Microsoft Outlook and want to configure it with your Gmail address, you're in luck. Newer versions of Outlook make this easier than ever. You will need to enable a couple of settings in the Gmail web portal and then connect to your Gmail account in Outlook. We'll see.

Step one: prepare your Gmail account

Before connecting your Gmail account to Outlook, you need to prepare your Gmail account to be ready for connection. Start by going to Gmail website in your desktop browser and logging in. You cannot do this in the mobile apps.

Click the gear icon in the upper right corner.

Choose “Setting” in the drop-down menu.

Switch to tab “Forwarding and POP / IMAP”.

In the section “IMAP access”, select option “Enable IMAP”.

And then click the button “Save Changes”.

That's all you have to do at the Gmail endpoint. Now is the time to connect your Gmail account to Outlook.

Step two: connect Outlook to your Gmail account

After configuring Gmail to allow IMAP connections, Outlook makes adding your Gmail account a breeze.

And Outlook, open the menu “File”.

Click the button “Account settings”.

In the drop-down menu, click the option “Account settings”.

In the Account Settings window menu, click on “New …”

Enter your Gmail address and click “Connect”.

Enter the password for your Gmail account, and then click “Connect”.

Note: If you use two-factor authentication on your Gmail account (and I really should), you will need to configure a specific application password for Outlook to connect to your Gmail account (check that page for various troubleshooting tips to connect Outlook to Gmail). If you don't use two-factor authentication and Outlook won't connect to your Gmail account after entering your frequent password, you may need to change a setting that allows less secure apps to connect to your Google account.

Wait for your account setup to complete. Unless you also want to set up Outlook Mobile on your phone, you can deselect that option and then click on the button “To accept”.

You should see your Gmail account added to the menu of your Outlook Account Manager. You can go ahead and close that window.

And now you can use your Gmail account directly within Microsoft Outlook.
