If at any time you accidentally turn off your computer by pressing the power button, there is an easy way to disable the power button (or make me do something different) in Windows 10. You can also control your sleep button, if your computer has one of those. That's how.

Change the way your computer's power button works in Windows 10 need a trip to the Control Panel. First, start Control Panel by opening the Start menu and typing “control”, and then press Enter or click the Control Panel icon.

In the control panel, click on “Hardware and sound”.

In the control panel, click on "Hardware and sound".

Look for the section “Energy options” and click “Change what the power buttons do”.

In Hardware and sound, click on

Next, you will see a screen that states what happens when you press the power or sleep buttons on your machine. On “Configuring the power and sleep buttons”, Click on the dropdown menu next to “When I press the power button”.

Click the drop-down menu next to

On the menu “When I press the power button”, you will see several options. This is what all the alternatives do:

  • Do nothing: When you press the power button, nothing happens.
  • To sleep: Your PC goes into low power sleep mode, but it still works.
  • Hibernate: Your PC saves the state of the system memory to disk and shuts down. Your session can be resumed later when you turn back on.
  • Delete: This shuts down Windows and shuts down your PC. (This is the default value).
  • Turn off the screen: Your screen turns off, but your pc still works.

To avoid losing your work if you press the power button, choose any option other than “Delete”. This will prevent accidental shutdowns. If you don't want interruptions of any kind as a consequence of pressing the power button, choose “Do nothing”.

In the drop-down menu, choose any option other than

Click on “Save Changes” and close Control Panel.

Tip: To change what your computer's sleep button does, choose an option from the drop down box “When I press the sleep button” here.

The next time you press the power button on your PC, will not turn off automatically. If you chose “Do nothing” in the last step, you can still turn off your PC when necessary by choosing “Delete” in the Start menu. I hope you have a productive day!!
